THE SMART NEEDLE

The Smart Needle is a disposable sensing needle that provides accurate, objective, and easily understandable real-time continuous monitoring of the injection pressure at the needle tip, the real pressure in the tissues.

Throughout peripheral nerve block (PNB) procedure, the anesthesiologist has visual feedback of the injection pressure, which allows him/her to safely and effectively perform a perineural injection in close proximity to the nerve, injecting at low pressure and thus avoiding inadvertent intraneural injection.

It consists of a standard PNB needle, for example a 22G x 85 mm needle as shown in the figure below, with an embedded fiber-optic pressure sensor that measures the injection pressure at the needle tip.

THE SMART NEEDLE MONITORING SYSTEM

The system consists of two parts: the Smart Needle (disposable sensing needle) and the Mobile Stand that carries the control unit and the visualization software.

The Smart Needle is connected to the control unit via a flexible fiber-optic cable and the visualization software allows real-time displaying and recording of the injection pressure.

FEATURES

Real-time injection pressure monitoring, enabling immediate reaction

Pressure is measured at the needle tip, accurately reflecting the real pressure in the tissues

Reliable and reproducible measurement, independent of injection parameters

It is used as a standard peripheral nerve block (PNB) needle

Injection pressure profile is automatically recorded

MODE OF USE IN BRIEF

  • Before starting the PNB procedure, the anesthesiologist connects the Smart Needle to the control unit and starts the visualization software.
  • Throughout the PNB procedure, the anesthesiologist has visual feedback of the injection pressure, which allows him/her to safely and effectively perform a perineural injection in close proximity to the nerve, injecting at low pressure and avoiding pressure spikes.
  • The anesthesiologist can immediately stop the injection if there is a sudden increase in pressure, i.e. in the case of an inadvertent intraneural injection, reposition the needle and start again.
  • Injection pressure profiles are automatically recorded.
